Why a free case can distort stock value and profit

A supplier adds a free case as a goodwill gesture. Operationally, that is welcome. In a system that values stock using only the latest purchase price, it can also make the item appear to cost nothing.

The delivery is real, but £0 is not a representative cost for every unit held or used during the period. If that last price is allowed to drive stock valuation and profit reporting, the numbers can move for the wrong reason.

Cost should reflect the period

Weighted average cost looks at the quantities and prices purchased across the period. A free case still reduces the average cost because the operation genuinely received additional stock without paying for it. It does not, however, turn every remaining bottle into a zero-cost item.

For example, if an operation buys ten cases at the normal price and receives one free, the combined cost is spread across eleven cases. The benefit is recognised without replacing the whole item's cost with the final £0 line.

Delivery processing matters to finance

This is why delivery information cannot remain separate from stock and financial reporting.
